Traveled to Almaty in Winters

Almaty Becomes White Feathers in Winter

When I booked a last-minute 24-hour layover in Almaty, Kazakhstan after my flight from Delhi, I had no idea what to expect. All I knew was that I wanted to make the most of my short time there, even if it meant braving some winter weather. Little did I know just how cold “winter” meant!

As soon as I stepped off the plane, large fluffy snowflakes were falling from the sky. Having come from much warmer Delhi, I was woefully unprepared for the biting sub-zero temperatures. The wind cut right through my jacket, leaving me wondering how the locals survived in such intense cold! Just getting to my hotel was an adventure in itself.

Air Astana in Almaty

Thankfully, one local took pity on this chilled traveler. After helping me communicate with others despite the language barrier, he invited me to check out some local nightlife. Our impromptu friendship led to an unforgettable night exploring clubs and chatting over drinks (with the aid of Google Translate, of course). I’m still grateful to him for ensuring I made it back to the airport safely before my early departure.

Even with just a day to explore, I crammed in as much as possible. The food was warm and hearty, providing much needed energy against the freezing temperatures. At First President Park, I watched locals enjoy winter sports like skiing and ice skating with smiles on their faces, despite the chill. Public transport and taxis helped me tour the city’s beautiful architecture and scenery despite the language barrier.

Flying with Air Astana was a pleasant experience too. With their transit visa program, more travelers can experience places like Almaty that might otherwise be out of reach during a layover. So, if you find yourself with a few spare hours in Almaty, take my advice – bundle up and get out there! An unexpected adventure may be waiting for you too.

In this vlog, I am also sharing my review on flying with Air Astana from Delhi to Almaty and onwards journey.
